Understanding Dementia: Diagnosis, Communication and Underserved Populations

Counseling and Clinical Practice with Older Adults and Individuals Living with Dementia

  • Describe the role of a clinical social worker in a healthcare setting who serves older adults
  • List common themes in family therapy with older adults and caregivers
  • Review validated mental health assessment tools
  • Use 5 counseling techniques in dementia treatment from early stage to end of life
  • Explain safety considerations and elder abuse

Summary

This workshop will highlight evidence-based counseling interventions for individuals living with dementia, their caregivers, and older adults, including CBT, Mindfulness, Solution-focused therapy, Grief/loss counseling, Motivational Interviewing. Case studies and common themes from family, individual, and couples therapy from the field will be shared. Attendees will learn about mental health assessment and screening tools with older adults. Safety considerations and cultural competency will be explored.
